There is no denying that freedom and patriotism is in the air through the whole month of July. I am especially blessed to have such great family and friends to spend this special time with. I have always loved the 4th of July- it is probably my favorite holiday to be honest. We met up with my family at grandma’s house in Utah to participate in several activities of the Freedom Festival, our weekend went as follows:
Saturday morning we woke up early and drove to Provo, to watch the hot air balloons get filled with air. It was almost magical watching them all float away one by one. Then Sheldon and I went to a benefit pancake breakfast after. Great start to the morning!
My Dad bought us tickets to the Stadium of Fire with to watch Tim McGraw. There was an extra ticket so we took one of my mission companions- Hna Escobar (from Guatemala)! It was a great concert and wonderful firework show!
Sunday we had a pleasant surprise- we got to meet Elder Holland of the 12 Apostles before walking into church! How cool is that?! He was there for a baby blessing and we ran into him. Sunday evening Rebecca, Sheldon and I played outside with some sparklers as we watched some neighborhood fireworks not far from the Timpanogos Temple.
Monday we all ran the freedom 5k before the parade. It was a blast. there were SO many people and we all did pretty well. Sheldon and ran the race in 32 mins and Rebecca and dad weren’t far behind us! I’m glad I have long country roads to train for it, that last hill was a killer! We all got medals for participation and the shirts that we got were pretty nice ones! Then we got to sit and watch the parade go along the same route we had just ran.
Not too long after the parade we grabbed some food and headed back home to idaho. So that we could catch the firework show in Lava. They are pretty far away (so no music) because they shoot them off over that cliff edge. Then at they end they do this thing called ‘the waterfall’ where it looks like they light up the whole hill there. pretty impressive. We also got their special cubed ice cream. There is something about sitting on a blanket in the grass, with good friends, a snack, and fireworks that just feels right.
I also made a decorative patriotic banner for our home and some red/white/blue cupcakes after all the excitement, to end it all on a good note.
